LLCL Facilitation

LLCL facilitated a one-day workshop with Media Houses, electronic & print media, as well as the MICT to narrow the gap of the high suicide rates in the country through addressing strategies on how suicide reports are crafted and using the same articles to educate. Suicide is a serious global public health problem that demands attention and prevention.

Evidence suggests that certain ways of reporting and portraying suicide in the media may increase rates of suicidal behavior. The media can therefore contribute to suicide prevention by understanding the aspects of reporting and portrayal that might increase the risk for vulnerable people. LLCL led the workshop in collaboration with MoHSS, with an online overview by Prof. Taiwo Lateef Sheikh, MB.BS (ABU), M.Sc, FWACP, Cert. GMH (Harvard). Professor Sheikh is on a mission to reshape attitudes towards mental health and suicide across Africa. He is also associated with Lifeline International, of which LifeLine/ChildLine Namibia is a member. The program is funded by LifeLine International and was attended by 25 media professionals.
